The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall [Blu-ray]

Product Description

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Mackintosh produced a unique, spectacular staging of the musical on a scale which had never been seen before. Inspired by the original staging by Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, this lavish, fully-staged production set in the sumptuous Victorian splendour of London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall features a cast and orchestra of over 200, plus some very special guest appearances.

I just got back from watching this exact performance at my local theatre, and I must admit, I am most impressed.

I was frightened that this might not be a staging at all, but more along the lines of a "concert in costume" much like the dissapointment I felt when I saw the Les Miserable's concert on Public TV.

Fear not. This production is pretty dead on to the staging that appears in the shows that I have watched live, and considering this was filmed "live" and simulcast, it is truly a sight to behold.

While this performance can't even compare to "being there" it is far removed than the sterile affair put on the screen by Joel Schumaker. Don't get me wrong. There is plenty of things I like about the movie, (like the spine tingling opening sequence, or the red hot sexuality of Point of No Return). But this by far is the most accurate "filming" I have seen of any ALW production.

Unlike Joseph, JC Superstar and CATS, which were "staged"... Read more

The DVD will contained the live streaming held on October 2, 2011 at the Royal Albert Hall. I had the privilege of seeing it in the theater in the U.S. on 10/2/11 and once again on 10/5/11 as a rebroadcasted Encore performance. I'm so excited that I'll be able to watch it again and again. The taping of the show and cinematography were spectacular. You by no means feel like you are in a seat in the audience watching it from may rows in front of the stage. No, you are up close, on stage, beholding closeups of the various performers play their iconic roles to perfection. You see the costumes like you've never seen them before, the rage and hurt in the Phantom's eyes, the conflict and yearning of Christine for two men. The performances of Ramin Karimloo (Phantom), Sierra Boggess (Christine), and Hadley Fraser (Raoul) are nothing less than brilliant, as well as the rest of the cast. If you love Phantom on stage, you'll love this DVD. The after performance reprisals of the Phantom... Read more

For the 25th anniversary of Phantom Andrew and Cameron did a fully staged concert version of pretty much the whole show at London's Royal Albert Hall complete with minor set piece and fully costumed with a cast and orchestra of over 200. (More complete then the movie just a like cut here or there NOTHING to really get excited over.) This version is nothing short of incredible. Now fans of Sarah and Michael DON'T KILL ME, please. I saw this in the theater for the live broadcast and was amazed by the performances in this. Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess, who co-starred in the "Phantom" sequel "Love Never Dies" in London, reunited for the special production and with amazing chemistry. Having grown up on the OLC recording and owning about a half a dozen others I've never grown to really like the piece outside of the original cast. Maybe it's nostalgia for it or just the way others have sung it but this time I was blown away. Never in my life have I cried at this show until now. Ramin's... Read more

This group is phenomenal. Their voices and harmonies are excellent and they sound and look great. This cd is really good and it's been a long wait to actually 'see' them perform. I'm not usually a fan of opera, but these guys bring about something special to this genre and some of it might be to do with their look and their youth, but I don't think anyone could really deny the talent these guys have. See, Simon is usually correct. This is a great dvd.

Great DVD. I loved the fact that we heard the story behind the creation of Il Divo. To hear about their backgrounds and how they began to blend their voices and create a sound that is truly appreciated by all is incredible to me. They continue to get better as they branch out into a slightly different sound as each CD/DVD comes out. I can't compare their voices to any I've heard before. Simon Cowell is a genious when it comes to finding new talent and he was right on the mark when he had this vision for Il Divo. I recommend this DVD to all who wish to discover and appreciate just what it takes to find unknown talent, realize their potential and have a vision as to how that talent will take the world by surprise. Il Divo did and will continue to for years to come.

The pop/opera group IL DIVO have finally released a performance DVD following two singles. This was shot at the Teatro Romano de Merida in Spain, and released ahead of the 'boys' embarking on their first ever concert tour around the globe. Much of the content is that on their CD 'Ancora', and the DVD includes the previously released singles 'Mama'and 'Regresa A Mi'. IL DIVO has brought a breath of fresh air to the music scene. Their classical trained voices combine beautifully and the five new numbers presented here leave us wanting more. On the down side however is the stereo audio. Surely this warranted DD5.1 audio? I also felt let down by their choice of songs in that there is very little difference in tempo between them. Fans will love it but it could have been that much better.

In celebration of the 100th birthday of the American composer Elliott Carter (1908 -2008), the budget-priced Naxos label released on two separate CDs Carter's five string quartets performed by the Pacifica Quartet. On Carter's birthday (December 8, 2008), Naxos released a CD of ten varied works for solo instruments, small ensembles, and chamber orchestra performed by the New Music Concerts Ensemble of Toronto under its director Robert Aitken, a long-time friend of the composer. This CD was accompanied by a DVD including discussions between Aitken and Carter and rehearsals of some of the works on the CD.

The three CDs and the DVD have been combined in this attractive Naxos set which offers the listener the opportunity to hear a good deal of the music of this difficult, controversial composer. The quartets in particular constitute seminal works of late 20th Century music which receive inspired performances from the Pacifica Quartet. The recording of the first and fifth... Read more

Let's mention the tough-mindedness of these varied works, right off. No concessions to an easy populism - rather notable for a modern 20th century composer who started out sounding like Aaron Copland? Still. Carter's string quartets are not necessarily any more difficult - to the mind, heart, or ear - than, say, Bartok's quartets, Schoenberg's quartets, and/or Anton Webern.

On the nice sides? Well, an consummate expertise in writing for his instruments, among other things - like a permeating cleanness and directness that may connote quintessential American music to some ears at least. The drama and the lyric gestures are indeed concentrated - and in that respect, both Bartok and Webern come quickly to mind. The third disc of quirkier short but varied pieces somehow connotes Charles Ives to me, mainly by way of the humor and experimentalisms.

If you are already a fan listener to the other 20th century chamber composers mentioned as associates, you may... Read more
